DAT 401 – Assignment – Week 4 – Remixes Mashups and the Readymade

Guitar - Try Me!

Brief: Working individually or in your groups, produce an intervention/remix/readymade action that will be documented as a short film.

Your intervention can be street-based, in a public place, or part of your home or univeristy life. It can also take place online, e.g. an adbust, mashup or remix.

Myself and Jordan Trembeth decided to create an artistic intervention by placing musical instruments (two guitars and bongos) in a public setting. The setting we chose was a busy area of the Plymouth University campus.

We were interested to see people’s reaction and engagement with these items being placed literally in their path in an environment where such things would be incongruous and unexpected.

DAT 401 – #LoveYourMorphology: Blade Runner vs Match.com

Working in a group of three, we discussed two ideas to meet the second option of this assignment brief. This had a precedent in the Nazca lines of Peru.

The second idea, and the one that the group decided to pursue was, again, to use an unusual alternative method of communication to send a message or make a statement, this time using a method much closer to home.

DAT 401 – Assignment – Week 2 – Crowdsourcing & Collaboration

Brief: Produce a crowdsourced 2D image, illustration, animation, film, sound piece or music track.

Working in a group of three, we decided to produce a crowdsourced film made up of short video clips of contributors reading a line each from the opening song of TV series, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

DAT 401 – Assignment – Week 1 – Divergent Technology

Brief: Produce an instructional illustration for a divergent use.

Results of brainstorming (with self):

After receiving the assignment, my initial idea was to utilise a set of headphones (the kind used for listening to music) as a compact hanging basket with self-watering arrangement. However, during my 45 minute walk home, I developed a different idea which appealed to me more… Continue reading “DAT 401 – Assignment – Week 1 – Divergent Technology”
